Ossip Zadkine (Russia, 1888-1967). - Lot 35
Ossip Zadkine (Russia, 1888-1967). The Elves. 1946. Bronze, signed and numbered 5/8. Foundry stamp and mark "Resurgam, Susse Frères Paris". With certificate from the Musée Zadkine, Paris, signed by Noëlle Chabert. Dimensions: 62 x 36 x 24 cm. Provenance: Acquired from Galerie Alain Noirhomme, Brussels, in 2001. Born in 1888 in Vitebsk in the former Russian Empire, Ossip Zadkine arrived in Paris to study Fine Arts in 1909. After spending time in the United States during the Second World War, he returned to France in 1945, ill, sad and penniless. His work took him all over the world, including Brussels, where he created a monumental plaster fresco entitled "La Danse" for the Métropole cinema. This was dismantled in 2024 and moved to the city's Jewish Museum. He is one of the most important figures in cubic sculpture. "Madame has always enjoyed discovering works of art, taking an interest in museums from the time she was a teenager and spending all the money her parents gave her for her 18th birthday on ... the purchase of a litho by Zadkine on a phrase from a poem by Apolinaire "Hauteurs inimaginables où l'homme combat"."
