Fiji mermaid. - Lot 66
Fiji mermaid. Taking the form of a chimeric animal, half mammal, half fish. Mixed materials mounted on a blackened wood base. Rare assembly based on a model brought to New York by Phineas Taylor Barnum (1810-1891) in 1840. Originally, Japanese sailors assembled the upper part of a monkey body with the tail of a fish. Dimensions: 32 x 59 x 17 cm. "I have a special fondness for this Fiji mermaid, because it preserves us from mawkish illusions and reminds us of what Homer said about them: mermaids are fearsome."
